SPICE Chromebooks
Using the Chromebooks
DO NOT PRESS SPACEBAR ON STARTUP!!!!
The Chromebooks used for SPICE are running in developer mode in order to run Arduino on Linux - this means that they are cranky when they start up because they sense that developer mode is a security threat. Thus on startup, there is a white screen that informs you that “OS verification is OFF” - when you see this, press CTRL+D to enter developer mode. DO NOT PRESS SPACEBAR!!! If you press spacebar and then press enter, you will wipe the entire computer and it will no longer have Linux, Arduino, or any information that was saved locally!
To log into ChromeOS:
- Press CTRL+L at startup
- Username: spicegirlsuo
- Password: SPICE2016
To log into Gallium (Linux):
- Press CTRL+D at startup
- Username: spicegirl
- Password: spicegirl

Install Arduino and Sketchbooks
Put the following in a shell script, chmod +x, log in as sudo, and run. You may have to do commands one at a time if they time out.
#!/bin/bash
# Script to setup basic arduino and spice software.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -qq install arduino
sudo apt-get -qq install emacs
sudo apt-get -qq install git
mkdir ~/sketchbook
cd ~/sketchbook
git clone https://github.com/agoering/spice-arduino.git
mv spice-arduino Spice
cd libraries
git clone https://github.com/dileepvr/spice-pinball.git
mv spice-pinball Pinball
arduino
Restart the laptops to allow new settings to take hold.
Updating the Libraries using Git on the SPICE laptops
If you use git, you can clone both the Pinball Library and SPICE Sketchbook into the Arduino folder and pull changes using git pull
.
To get the freshest version on the SPICE camp laptops, copy the following using CTRL+c
and paste it into a Terminal window using CTRL+SHIFT+v
. You can also save as a shell script.
#!/bin/bash
cd ~/sketchbook/libraries/Pinball
git pull
cd ~/sketchbook/Spice
git pull
exit
